At Israel’s Directorate of Defense Research and Development (Maf’at), every head of the Optronics Department since 2010 has been a JCT graduate. This department develops the electro-optical systems that underpin Israel’s most vital defense capabilities—from threat detection to precision targeting.
JCT-trained engineers are directly behind many of Israel’s most advanced and visible defense technologies.
During recent conflicts, these technologies have helped Israel respond to large-scale threats with speed, accuracy, and effectiveness.

As the first institution in Israel to establish an electro-optics department, JCT has long been at the forefront of defense-related innovation. Its graduates have gone on to lead the development of some of Israel’s most critical systems—from missile defense to tunnel detection to next-generation laser interception technologies.
During the past 12 years, JCT alumni and faculty have received more than 10 Israel Defense Prizes—the Ministry of Defense’s highest honor—for their contributions to the development of the lifesaving technology that powers the Arrow, Iron Dome, Iron Beam, and cross-border tunnel detection systems.
As threats evolve, so too must the technology that counters them.

Col. Yaniv Avitan, a graduate of JCT’s electro-optics engineering program, exemplifies the real-world impact of the college’s defense training. As head of a specialized unit within the IDF, he led the development of breakthrough technologies to detect Hamas’s attack tunnels—an achievement that earned him one of the country’s highest honors for security innovation.
